Chicken Still South Africa's Favourite Fast-Food

With an approximate 1 in 5 chickens bought consumed via restaurants* and take-out outlets, it was no surprise that chicken fast-food giant KFC cinched first place in the ‘favourite fast-food’ category of the Sunday Times Top Brands Awards for 2009, while another chicken franchise, Nando’s, beat out Steers for second place.

“To create the results for the 2009 Top Brands Awards individuals were asked to say which brands they used regularly and then to rate all the brands they knew on a points-out-of-ten basis,” says Neil Higgs, the Director of Innovation and Development for TNS Research Surveys, who released the results in August of last year.

While the fast-food sector is reported to have generated a staggering R16.8 billion form 2006 - 2007 and accounts for 29% of the systems available in the franchise sector**, research attributes R3.5 billion of that turnover to chicken fast-food establishments alone.

“Chicken is by far the most popular quick service restaurant (QSR) segment. KFC, which is housed under the Yum brand, has the lion’s share of the chicken QSR industry, followed by Chicken Licken,” says Zahira Osman in her report An Apptite for Growth (October 2008).
